We got a run down from Gold Circle racing analyst, Warren Lenferna, after the #VDJ2019 Gallops last week, ahead of this weekend’s race at Hollywoodbets Greyville, where it is all systems go for Saturday 6 July 2019!
Hollywoodbets Greyville is decked out in its finest and the weather is set to fair with a predicted 25 degrees for the 50000 people who are expected on course.
DO IT AGAIN:
Last year’s winner who galloped very well and looked in show room condition at the gallops last Thursday. His form is solid and he is filled with class and ability and is one of the leading lights to win the Vodacom Durban July. Many say, he can, DO IT AGAIN!
Who is actually the older brother to ruling favourite Hawwaam galloped exceptionally well at Greyville and took ones breath away with the way he quickened up in fine style. He pulled away from his working companion with ease. He runs for his new owner and has a huge chance of landing the first prize this year! He won the Sun Met and will be ridden by Gavin Lerena this time.
Nearly won the Sun Met when stealing a lead in the home straight. He has ability and should be very well suited to this track but does have a deep draw to deal with. He should run very well and could be the each way bet value. He is well weighted to perform well in the race.
The talking horse, the exciting horse and he looks to be the shining star on the horizon. Many racing fans have been waiting to see him contest the Vodacom Durban July. He is top class and well weighted and has a very bright chance of winning the big one. Let’s see if he is as good as most think he is.
Is a champion in his own right. He is a bit off form at the moment and is seven years old. Horses may lose their form but they never lose their ability and that he has! The distance is a concern as all his top form is over 1600m. If he were to fill a place position, it would be no shock at all.
TWIST OF FATE:
Has solid form and has had to play second fiddle to Hawwaam last time they met. He is a six time winner, but is drawn deep and Mauritian rider Nooresh Juglall is in SA to ride him. He should run very well and can finish in the first four.
Is one of the fillies in the race taking on the boys which is not always very easy! In saying that, she is top class and cannot be ignored, she has run with some of the best of them. She hails from the stable of KZN veteran trainer Dennis Drier. She has a bit to do for the win but one thing for certain is that she should relish the distance.
Is a horse that can win and topple the favourite at the weights. His last win was in Gauteng and it was very impressive. He has only raced 7 times for 4 wins which is an impressive record. He might well have a lot more to offer and has to be taken very seriously and is one for the shortlist. A talented sort!
Is one of the outsiders and has a bit to do for the win. He is seldom too far off the action but has a tough draw to deal with – others preferred for the win.
Is the winner of the Summer Cup but has been a bit below his best form since then. He has ability, he deserves his place in the race but others are selected for the win. He could surprise and finish in the money.
EYES WIDE OPEN:
Judging by the gallop and the comments from his trainer, he is in a very good space at the moment and has had a top quality prep coming into the big race. He carries the same weight as last year and sees out every inch of the distance. Some make him the horse to beat!
MADE TO CONQUER:
Was last year’s runner up – can the Snaith team saddle the same exacta this year? His gallop was good and his big race rider Mark Khan seemed thrilled with his mount. He has not won for a while but has been running very well and has to be given serious consideration.
ROY HAD ENOUGH:
Accelerated powerfully to win the Track And Ball Derby last time and one thing that is needed to win the VDJ is some acceleration in the straight. He is an attractive horse that clearly has some ability but this is his toughest test as he is meeting much stronger now.
Has been aimed and prepped beautifully for the Vodacom Durban July. He is from a powerful stable and should run very well. He gets the services of Corne Orffer and comes into the race with a light weight.
Is a very talented filly who stays well. She has a place money chance from a top draw with a very light weight. She deserves the utmost respect.
Won comfortably last time but has a great deal more to do now. Her stable companion looks to be the better of the Joey Ramsden pair.
Is another filly in the race that has quite a lot to do. She gets the services of Smanga Khumalo from a good draw and off a light weight. She would be a surprise winner according to the betting.
Won her big race in Gauteng at very long odds – she is clearly talented to have done that but her runs since then have been a little disappointing. She will need to improve a lot off those efforts to win the big one. She is an outsider in the race.
Is a reserve runner and will have a lot to do to win the race if he gets in.
