This is by far the most glamorous element of the Vodacom Durban July Fashion Experience. Each of the eight national designers is selected because of their position in the market, their experience and their current media profile.
Celebrated designers such as Terrence Bray, David Tlale, Kluk CGDT, Zama Mathe, Gideon, Colleen Eitzen, Paledi Segapo, Leigh Schubert, Karen Monk Klijnstra, Sibu Msimang, Vino Moodley, Gavin Rajah and many others have participated in the event. Each designer shows a distinct and individual interpretation of the theme and showcases their work at the Fashion Showcase and again on raceday on the Action Stage at the Vodacom Durban July.
Each designer is required to design a small range that consists of a raceday ensemble for a couple and a showstopper. The range must be shown first at the Vodacom Durban July Fashion Showcase. As always, the media focus is on this group and they set the trend and standard of the fashion.
We invite two or three out of province designers, with the balance of designers coming from KwaZulu-Natal. We never show the same KwaZulu-Natal designer two years in succession.
The designers in the Vodacom Durban July Invited Designer Showcase will present their creations on the Action Stage on Vodacom Durban July day.
We invite 8 designers who have established businesses or brands. Preferably, they must have shown on other major events such as SA Fashion Week, Johannesburg Fashion Week or Cape Town Fashion Week etc. This is not a platform for designers who want to launch themselves or a brand, it is for those with a good fashion history, established studios and where possible, retail outlets. An established national, media profile is very important. The above criteria must be current. We invite two or three designers from Johannesburg or Cape Town and five from KwaZulu-Natal. In an effort to give as many local designers the opportunity to show, we never show a KwaZulu-Natal designer in two consecutive years.
Usually by the end of March. A final list will appear on this website and on the event’s official Facebook page.
They are required to design a range of three looks – a showstopper and a raceday ensemble for a man and a woman, specifically to the theme. The range must be shown first at the Vodacom Durban July Showcase and on raceday. Invited Designers do not compete.
