About the Young Designer Award

PillayVDJYDALogo600This event is by far the strongest of all the fashion elements. The brief goes to colleges and universities throughout Durban and surrounding areas that offer fashion design on a full or part time basis. The Young Designer Award is the biggest and most supported design competition in the region, aimed at emerging talent, currently in South Africa.

Colleges that participated in 2016:
* Durban University of Technology (Young Designer Award included in syllabus)
* Lindiwe Khuzwayo School of Fashion
* PMB School of Fashion (Young Designer Award included in syllabus)
* Inscape Design School
* Eldonai School of Fashion

It is a unique concept and in previous years it engaged the colleges and universities as well as the students, throughout SA. Our current aim is to focus on and promote emerging Durban and KZN talent. In 2016 prizes awarded to the winners were as follows:

The 2016 winner received an amazing prize of an accompanied trip to New York to experience New York Fashion Week flying courtesy of DELTA Air Lines, Business Class (Delta One), Johannesburg/New York return, plus five nights accommodation in New York with the compliments of DELTA Air Lines, plus R5 000 from Gold Circle and R5 000 from Schweppes, a spectacular Huawei P9 Smartphone from Vodacom, a R5 000 Gift Card courtesy of Gateway Theatre of Shopping, a CANON PowerShot Digital Camera valued at R2 500 courtesy of Daisy Business Solutions, a R2 500 Gift Card courtesy of Forever New, a Clarins hamper to the value of R1 500 and a luxury Thierry Mugler Angel gift set.

Second prize was R3 000 and third prize was R2 000 from Gold Circle.

The process of selecting the 10 finalists is comprehensive and ensures that the very best students are given this amazing platform. The competition in only open to final year students, but what makes this unique, is that the colleges make the decision about which of their students will be allowed to enter. The Durban semi-finalists were selected from 86 students last year, who showed their finished work to theme, each received 2 tickets to attend raceday. This gave those not selected, the additional opportunity of competing in the on-track competitions on raceday. We kicked off the Fashion Experience with a show that featured the 25 Durban semi-finalists, from which 10 finalists were selected. The judging panels throughout the process were made up of very established designers, fashion lecturers, fashion journalists, fashion fundis and myself. The fashion programme director does not, however participate in the selection of the winners.
