Oh Susanna and Surcharge withdrawn

The two Grade 1 winners from the Daily News 2000 race meeting at Greyville on Saturday, Surcharge and Oh Susanna, were withdrawn from the R4.25-million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July at the second acceptance today (Monday).

Surcharge from the Stuart Pettigrew stable was an impressive winner of the R2-million Daily News 2000 after having finished second in each of the three legs of the Highveld Triple Crown, finally getting the Grade 1 honour that he richly deserved. The Gimmethegreenlight colt had his July odds slashed after the race but trainer Pettigrew, in consultation with owner Ian van Schalkwyk, decided to give the three-year-old a rest after his testing programme during the season.

Pettigrew is reported as saying they did not want to push the colt into the July which would include another eight-hour trip on a float from the Highveld to Durban. “We’re putting him away for a deserved rest, he’s only three, a big baby and will return better and stronger at four.”

Te Justin Snaith stable team had been up front from the start that Oh Susanna’s participation in the Vodacom Durban July was not a certainty and warned punters not to back the star filly. It is possible instead that the Sun Met winner will contest the Grade 1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes on the same day while it is also possible that with the stable having commented that the Australian-bred daughter of Street Cry had already proven herself and “done enough”, she may not race again this season.

The decision not to run her in the big race was therefore not surprising as was the withdrawal of the stable’s former July winner Legislate that has only competed in a barrier trial since he last raced more than a year ago and last week was supplemented into the Grade 2 Post Merchants for which he accepted today. His programme could therefore include a place in the field for the R1-million, Grade 1 World Sports Betting Champions Cup on Super Saturday at the end of the season.

The Snaith stable also declined to accept with July entries Elusive Silver and Platinum Prince while Candice Bass-Robinson supplemented her Alado gelding Rocket Countdown into the big race entry list. The gelding had won the Selangor Cup and after a three-month break has come out and finished second in both the Winter Guineas and Winter Classic. Journalist: Richard McMillan.
