The Durban University of Technology showcased it’s fashion design reputation with a clean sweep of the top three in the highly prestigious Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair, with Katekani Moreku taking home the first prize while Tiloné Viljoen was crowned winner of the Vodacom Durban July Fashion Challenge presented by Durban Fashion Fair on Saturday.
Designers had to dazzle the judges on the technicality of their outfit, how well they interpreted the theme “The Colour of Magic” when creating a raceday ensemble that effortlessly portrayed the stylish and sophisticated spirit of the Vodacom Durban July.
Moreku beat over a hundred entrants from Technikons and Colleges from around the province of KwaZulu-Natal and he joins a list of prominent Young Designer winners which includes 2014 winner Sadie Bosworth-Smith, who is one of 2017’s Invited Designers.
Moreku won an impressive hamper of prizes, including a mentored trip to the SA Fashion Week.
DUT continued it’s dominance when its students took home the other two spots in the top three with Hlengiwe Queeneth Mdunge and Nazreen Paruk being voted as the next best by the high-powered panel of judges.The Vodacom Durban July Fashion Challenge presented by Durban Fashion Fair is open to amateur and professional designers from all over the country and the judges whittled the numbers down to a top ten from the initial storyboard submissions, with the prizewinners decided during the recent Vodacom Durban July Fashion Experience Shows.
Taking home the title of Fashion Challenge winner for the 2017 Vodacom Durban July was Tilone Viljoen from Durban.
“I was inspired by the contrast between masculinity and femininity,” Viljoen commented.
“I wanted to challenge how a woman can seen as strong without losing her femininity.”
Durban designers filled the minor placings as well, with Martin Steenkamp and Alice Rash finishing second and third.
Winner of this year’s Classic Racewear for Men, Naseem Nazeer was not going to overthink his approach to the event and knew that he had a wide scope to work with when putting together his Vodacom Durban July 2017 masterpiece.
“This year’s theme has so much depth to it I had a lot of possibilities,” Naseem Nazeer said. “I knew that I was just going to have to keep it simple, classy and clean.”
Mnotho Ngema finished second while Prince Shongwe took third in the Vodacom Durban July Classic Racewear for Men category.
Prince Nsibande was crowned Classic Racewear for Women winner in 2017 and with such a cosmopolitan group of people coming together to celebrate Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, his inspiration came from all parts of the Rainbow Nation.
“People from all over the country come to this event. I used the concept of the mixed ethnicity of South Africa for my design,” Nsibande mentioned.
In the Vodacom Durban July Classic Racewear for Women category, Kireshen Chetty finished second with Kate Shoesmith taking home the third prize.Catherine Nolan, who took home the prize for designing the outfit worn by the Huawei Best Dressed Couple, said she took inspiration from the character of South Africa.
“Traditional African high-end fashion inspired my design,” Nolan commented.
Pregasen Govender and Monque Talita finished second and third respectively in the Vodacom Durban July Huawei Best Dressed Couple competition.
In the Vodacom Durban July Classic Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator category it was Zandile Maphumulo who took home first prize followed by Sphenelele Ntuli and Pregasen Govender in third. It was Govender’s second award of the day after he finished second in the Best Dressed Couple competition.
