It’s the Eyeofthetiger!
56 000 racing fans shrieked with delight at favourite Eyeofthetiger crossed the finish line to win the 2006 Vodacom Durban July by more than a length, rounding off a memorable record breaking event held in sunny weather at Greyville Racecourse.

With a stellar array of political, business, entertainment and sporting celebrities watching, including Lesothos King Letsie III, one of the most open Vodacom Durban Julys turned into a thriller of a showdown, with many of the fancied horses playing a part in the 2200 metre race.

2006EyeOfTheTigerWinsIn the luxurious corporate hospitality suites, celebrity guests included reigning Miss South Africa Thuli Sithole, Olympic gold medalist Ryk Neethling, acting stars Rosie Motene, Leon Schuster, and Gaurav, pop stars Tamara Dey, Heinz Winckler, Danny K, rubbed shoulders with high powered figures from the world of big business and politics.

The top fashion award of the day went to Durban designer Lisa Lund, who walked away with the top honours in the national Vodacom Durban July Fashion Challenge brought to you by Canderel, with a striking pastel vintage outfit rounded off with a striking top hat.

The Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award was scooped by Deanne McIntosh, whose feisty colourful outfit that lent heavily on the fashion theme of “Baubles, Bangles and Beads.”

Regular winner Mike Wheeler took the Most Avant Garde award, with a zany outfit that incorporated cylindrical flanks on the skirt of the zany outfit.

For the tens of thousands of fashionistas for who the Vodacom Durban July is an unmissable social occasion, the race saw a bold swing back to elegance and style, even though the balmy warm weather was kind to those that were brave enough to bare plenty of flesh for the crowds and cameras on the day.
